Frequently Asked Questions

To apply for Family Legal Aid, you must engage an approved Legal Aid lawyer. Your lawyer will help you complete the required application forms, attach proof of your income and assets, and submit the paperwork directly to Legal Aid Services on your behalf.

Qualification for Family Legal Aid depends on your annual income, personal assets, and the complexity of your case. The Ministry of Justice sets specific income thresholds based on things like your household size and dependent children, while also considering your living expenses and whether your legal issue requires court representation.

In some cases, you may be required to pay back part or all of your Legal Aid debt. Legal Aid Services evaluates your financial situation and may set up a manageable repayment plan or place a charge over assets if you gain property or money through your legal settlement.

No, you don't have to apply for Legal Aid to engage with us - we also accept private instructions.
